JPL’s adult winter reading program under way

It’s time for the 2021 adult winter reading program at the Jefferson public library, with the theme “Silhouettes & Stories”. Each year, the librarians choose a theme and design a program of reading challenges, special programs and a packet filled with activities centered on the theme. With this theme, the focus will be on reading biographies and biographical fiction.

“This program is a unique wintertime reading group experience. The goal of the winter reading program is to discover new reading interests, become more familiar with the library collection, and to provide opportunities for readers to gather and share experiences,” library director Jane Millard said.

The program will run Jan. 6 through March 13. Anyone can register through the library’s Facebook page or by calling the library at 515-386-2835. Participants then pick up the activity packet and get started with their winter reading.

Participants read six books, complete an activity packet and attend one program related to the theme. Four events have been planned to go along with the winter reading program: a kick-off party with fun activities to introduce the theme, a guest presenter, a “maker-day” craft session, and a book discussion.

The adult winter reading program will conclude with a party in mid-March to celebrate readers who complete the program.

This is the 12th year for the winter reading program. The program is changed each year, and this year some of the changes are due to the pandemic.

The biggest change is not gathering as a full group.  There are normally 25 to 30 participants.  To follow safety guidelines, the programs will be presented virtually on Zoom and also in-person, with limited attendance, at an off-site location that is larger than the library meeting room to allow for social distancing.  Masks are required at all Library events.

Another change is where people can get their books. Right now, the library is temporarily closed due to the pandemic, but avid readers always find ways to read.  Participants are encouraged to read books from the library collection. A list of theme-related books is included in the reading packet and participants can also search the library’s online catalog for books they would like to read.

The Library is currently offering curbside pickup, so readers may call the library and librarians will gather the books and other items for them to check out and meet them outside on the north sidewalk.  If they prefer, they can read books from other sources, such as eBooks that are free to download from Bridges with their library card.  Or they can read books from other libraries or borrow from their friends, or they may have books they purchased from the Friends book sale!  There are many options this year.

Library staff and trustees thanked the Friends of the Library and the following businesses for donating prizes for readers: Addie’s, Bomgaars, Dunkers by Matt, Deal’s Orchard, Fareway, HyVee, Jefferson Ace Hardware, Krieger’s Flower Shop and Greene Goods Market, Royal Jewelers, Subway,  and The Printer’s Box.
